Der Begriff „Casino” (später Spielbank bzw. Spielcasino) bezeichnet ursprünglich einen Vergnügungsort venezianischer Landleute. Schon immer war ein Spielcasino eine Verknüpfung von Vergnügen und Nützlichem. Die Institutionalisierung des Glücksspiels fand in Europa in den Bädern und Kurorten, auf Jahrmärkten, Messen und adligen Bällen und in den Großstädten statt. Laut historischen Quellen fand bereits seit 1170 in Venedig das erste Glücksspiel unter freiem Himmel statt, besonders in Zeiten des venezianischen Karnevals. Die ersten konzessionierten Spielhäuser sind im 14./15. Jahrhundert in Holland und Flandern anzutreffen. Das erste deutsche Spielhaus findet sich 1396 in Frankfurt am Main. 1638 wurde die venezianische „Ridotto“ erster ausschließlicher Glücksspielort. 1720 wurde die erste Spielbank in den deutschen Ländern in Bad Ems gegründet. 1763 wird in Spa das „Redoute“ eröffnet, das sich in Kürze zu einer der größten Glücksspielmetropolen entwickelt. Mit der französischen Revolution werden jedoch sämtliche Casinos geschlossen. Dadurch werden die deutschen Länder zum Zentrum der Glücksspieler, insbesondere die Casinos in Aachen und Baden-Baden (1824). Im Jahre 1841 schaffen die Franzosen François Blanc und Louis Blanc mit der Gründung der Spielbank von Bad Homburg vor der Höhe die Doppel Zero ab, wodurch das Bad Homburger Casino zur erfolgreichsten Spielbank dieser Zeit wird. 1866 schreibt Dostojewski in Bad Homburg die beiden Romane „Der Spieler” und „Babuschka” Gräfin Sophie Kisseleff. 1863 übernahm François Blanc das Casino von Monte Carlo, das schließlich zur „Welthauptstadt des Luxus und des Glücksspiels“ wird. Diese Verschmelzung von Glücksspiel und Kunst und Entertainment wird rund 100 Jahre später zum Vorbild von Las Vegas. 1942 eröffnete in Las Vegas das erste Casino namens „El Rancho“. Nachdem die Casinos in Nevada zuerst fest in der Hand der Mafia waren, wich die Bandenwirtschaft in den 60er Jahren zunehmend dem Shareholdermanagement. In Deutschland bestand von 1871 bis 1933 offiziell ein Glücksspielverbot.

Im wesentlichen werden die Glücksspiele Roulette und Black Jack angeboten, der Resonanz der Gästeschaft entsprechend gegebenenfalls erweitert um die klassischen Kartenspiele Baccara und verschiedene Arten von Poker, deren Ablauf von Croupiers oder Dealern geleitet wird. Dabei setzen die Spieler nach festgelegten Spielregeln entweder mit Geld oder mit vor Spielbeginn gegen Geld eingetauschten Spielmarken, den sogenannten Jetons oder Chips.

The term "Casino" is of Italian origin, the root word being "Casa" (house) and originally meant a small country villa, summerhouse or pavilion. The word changed to refer to a building built for pleasure, usually on the grounds of a larger Italian villa or palazzo. Such buildings were used to host civic town functions - including dancing, music listening and gambling. There are examples of such casinos at Villa Giulia and Villa Farnese. In modern day Italian, this term designates a bordello (also called "casa chiusa", literally "closed house"), while the gambling house is spelled casinò with an accent.[1] During the 19th century, the term "casino" came to include other public buildings where pleasurable activities, including gambling, and sports took place. An example of this type of building is the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. Not all casinos were used for gaming. The Copenhagen Casino was a theatre, known for the use made of its hall for mass public meetings during the 1848 Revolution which made Denmark a constitutional monarchy. Until 1937 it was a well-known Danish theatre.[2] The Hanko Casino located in Hanko, Finland - one of that town's most conspicuous landmarks - was never used for gambling. Rather, it was a banquet hall for the Russian nobility which frequented this spa resort in the late 1800s, and is presently used as a restaurant. The so-called "Casino",[3] a famous landmark overlooking Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island, has never been used for traditional games of chance, which were already outlawed in California by the time it was built.

In most jurisdictions worldwide, gambling is limited to persons over the age of license (18 or 21 years of age in most of the United States and 16 to 21 in most other countries where casinos are permitted).[6] Customers gamble by playing slot machines or other games of chance (e.g., craps, roulette, baccarat) and some skill (e.g., blackjack, poker) (for more see casino games).
